Empire of Mille Sessau (T) Empty
PostSubject: Empire of Mille Sessau (T)   Empire of Mille Sessau (T) Icon_minitimeTue Mar 01, 2011 10:57 pm

Jaudeaux, High Court Room

The High Court of the Empire's Grand Palace was a place of valid splendor and greatness. Decorated with the finest luxuries from every corner of the Empire, it shone as a beacon of listless culture and art. The various Counts met here on their whims to discuss whatever best suited the weather, but this meeting was different. The Empress had assembled her cohorts to address them as an assembled court, a feat very rarely done. So they mingled and drank, feasted and laughed while they waited. The throne on which Empress Alexandria de Salle II often commanded from was empty, but not for very long. She appeared in a long and elegant evening gown of velvet with touches of Sessauan fur across its hems and she was flanked by a pair of plate mail chevaliers. The Empress took her throne and without a word the entire tone of the room slowly quieted.

" Bonjour .. many of you wonder why I have brought you here. " She cooed with mild hesitation. Her assembly did little to break the tension that was building. " Since the Golden Reign, we have not since explored our borders. Our maps are ancient, and there is little we know past the realm of Mille Sessau. It is with this great authority I have vested in me that I will announce an exploration into the northern mountains and past them to document the world. I understand it is not without peril, and I will send a third of a company of chevaliers with the cartographers to ensure their safe return. The Les Royales will also depart in full force along the northern coast. Although they may not be able to directly intervene, they will also do their part to document the land. If news reaches us of something of importance, I will call you to the court once again. Now, let us .. eat. "

The feast had begun, and most of those present could care less. The chevaliers were spoiled minor nobles and taken and paid from the national coffers, that would not effect any of the Counts own finances.

Chouannerie la Que, Empress Port

" Off with it, fool! " The leftenant yelled, grabbing the young sailor and forcing the rope from his hands. The four vessels were now away, the Defenseur at the helm with it's three rows of oars in full swing and its huge sails billowing forward, the crest of Sessau across the fore. At the port side were the Jeune Fille and the Sentinelle. Lastly on the starboard side was the Vievenue. They were smaller vessels but no less menacing with their full sails and huge oars in full motion. They would journey south into the broad and open ocean until they found new land. They had intentions of spreading the Empire, of cultivating the foreign masses and bringing more under the Empresses' reign.

The Grand Admiralty was currently chaired by Admiral Jacques du Cursé, although he was not part of the Grand Flotte. The vessels set sail without him, he would stay in Chouannerie la Que to manage other menial tasks dealing with the Empire's coffers. The last vessel, the Chasseur would stay behind and ensue that the port was not left entirely undefended. The journey would take at least a full moon and so du Cursé did not expect his ships back for two or three days, if that at all.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Summary
-- 100 Chevaliers (Sessauan Heavy Infantry) and a small group (12) of Sessauan explorers journey north from Jaudeaux into the Ezrian Mountain Chain intending to document what they see there and beyond.

-- One Trireme and three Biremes head southeast across the ocean.

Grand Flotte,
Diminic Ocean

The four vessels had been traveling for nearly eight days before the two moderately sized islands were seen. The journey had fone without incident and the small exploratory fleet maneuvered the winds with a cautious grace. They had been intending to find huge new swathes of land but instead the four vessels instead stumbled across a pair of small islands. The Defenseur slowed it's speed until the flags could be raised to indicate to two of the Biremes to circle north around the island, whereas the Defenseur and Vievenue would circle south to scout out the island. Were they current inhabited by another empire, what natural resources (if any) could be spied upon the island. They may have been utterly useless, nothing but sullen rocks with the sole intention of impeding the sojourn of the Sessuan vessels. The cartographers on both craft made careful note of each island, the most prominent of which was that one island was much larger than the other. They would circle the area for half a day or so before the Vievenue dispatched a small row boat with three sailors and made way toward the larger island.

The three sailors were nervous, and one sailor, Philip de Vaus made explicit notice to the Leftenant that he wouldn't set foot on the island. How wrong he was. The boat made the necessary headway and one of the sailors jumped from the craft and pulled it ashore. All three sailors (including Philip) then headed inward.

Ezrian Mountain Chain,
Above the Hold of Karag Mor

The one hundred and twelve man strong group was slow going. Within three days travel outside of the cartographed areas of the Sessuan Empire the Chevaliers and explorers ran into rugged mountain terrain. There was little life here, a few mountain goats and ominous looking birds. One of the twelve explorers had been summarily bitten by a rather dangerous looking snake and the infected finger was swiftly removed by the malevolent hand of a Chevalier. The leader of the expedition, Capitaine Mathieu de Que threatened to turn the entire expedition around, citing " nothing great lays past the land of the Empire, " but he pressed on knowing the Empress held them accountable for exploring the lands north of the Empire.

The men of Sessua were a different breed. Winter was still upon the Northern continents, but the men wore fanciful furs and gaudy jewelry. The explorers carried handful of tomes and books, and even the Chevaliers seemed irritated when their chain mail or boots received unnecessary dirt. Each step gave a clank, and the Sessuan explorers chatted between themselves while passing around bread and wine. They marched three abreast, such a line was forty men long. The explorers took up the middle while the armored Chevaliers brought up the front and rear. Most of the Chevaliers, although they were a legitimate fighting force, carried huge leather packs across their back which held salted fish and bread. Once darkness was upon the group, they would stop and make camp in one of the many ravines and gullies that dotted the landscape.

The exploring Sessuan vessels find two islands and begin to explore them.

The Chevaliers and explorers heading north continue to head north but find nothing so far.

Moderation Mark

Diminic Ocean
The Sessuan flotilla had finally spotted landfall after a little over a week at sea and in good order for dark clouds were forming out over the water to the southeast. The occasional flash of light from that direction indicated a coming storm, which to the sailors was never a good thing. Warm ocean storms tended to be violent and hazardous to vessels without a safe harbor to put in at.

Sailing around both islands at least gave the ship captains a chance to spy the land from a distance before deciding whether or not to set down a landing party to investigate the islands further. The smaller of the two was pretty much flat terrain with a few dotted trees and one massive cone shape mountain spring from the center. From the soft billows of smoke that rose from the summit, it was clear that the mountain was still a very active volcano.

The larger of the two islands though looked more promising though it had a matching volcano as its sister island. This island definitely had rich soil for a lush forest had sprung up from the ground and even out some distance into the ocean in the form of mangrove trees. White sandy beaches dotted ran along both islands as well making them ideal looking to the sea worn sailors.

From the shoreline of both islands there were no signs of inhabitants to the island, especially across the flat expanse of the smaller island. So the captain of the Defenseur decided on scouting the larger of the two. So the small row boat set to shore in a small cove, and Philip de Vaus grumbling followed the orders of the Leftenant as the three men scouted a little inland. Though they didn't find anything worth note, they did stumble across a small river covered in mangroves with fresh animal tracks leading to the water's edge.

Ezrian Mountains

The exploration party made slow going through the mountainous terrain along the Ezria southern border, having to back track often when a seemingly open trail disappeared into a ravine or was block from a recent rockslide. Though the drawbacks made the disgruntled troops feel like they were being wasted babysitting explorers, they did the job anyways since the thought of disobeying direct orders from the empress wasn't a kind thought. Even with such a large party of men, the mountainous predators still stalked their trail with the occasional glance of a wolf or other such predator that seemed abnormally large than what the men were use to back home.

Luckily for most of the men the cold was more nuisance than problem since they were dressed warmly and the snowy mountains hadn't tossed to much harm in that regards their way. On the fourth night of the expedition the camp was woken to the screams of a man. Sentries with torches and those getting a chance to sleep searched around their camp only to find a trail of blood leading off into the darkness. It wouldn't be until morning that the discovery would be made of one of the civilian explorers was missing. [Note: Capitaine Mathieu de Que can order a search for the missing explorer which will be placed into the next mod mark.]

Near the end of the fifth day the weary expedition party would be greeted by the sounds of stone one metal coming from a valley up ahead. Capitaine Mathieu made the decision to dispatch twenty men to investigate the noise while calling a halt in case the scouts brought back bad news. His suspicions grew when only five of the twenty returned back to the temporary encampment.

"So what did you find," ordered Mathieu.

"It seems to be a stone quarry sir. Some strange birdfolk seem to be harvesting the stone in the valley up ahead and placing it into carts that head down a road north of here," replied one of the scouts.

-The Sessuan flotilla stumble on two active volcanoes that have created islands around them. Both seem uninhabited. The smaller of the two islands is a flat expanse of land with poor soil leading up to the volcano's base. The larger of the two islands is heavily wooded [ wood resource] except around the base of the volcano. A three man landing party goes ashore and scouts a little inland because of an impending storm to the south. They find a small fresh water river with fresh game tracks.

-The exploration party in the Ezrian mountains has had one of the explorers gone missing with a possible blood trail leading into the dark night belonging to the man. The next day in the late afternoon they stumble across an Ezrian quarry where avians are hard at work harvesting the stone. 15 men stay to watch while 5 are sent back to inform Capitaine Mathieu de Que of the discovery.

Jaudeaux, High Court Room

" Madam, it can work. We scouted no other natives and the land stretches for a thousand leagues and onward! The land is ripe for the taking. " Philip de Vaus excitedly pointed to the hastily sketched maps. He was indicating not the pair of islands that the Grand Flotte had discovered in it's first weeks, but rather the beginnings of a huge landmass they had discovered north of that. Truthfully, no Sessuan had even stepped onto the land, but instead the Grand Flotte had navigated north and discovered a second continent. They sailed up and down the coast three or four times, with the admiralty allowing the cartographers to map as much as they could. Mostly plains with sparse beaches and forests, the land itself was expansive, much more so than the the small idyllic islands the fleet had discovered.

The fleet than hurried back to port and dispatched a handful of the cartographers to the City of Sapphire so that they could present their case for colonization to the Empress. They were admitted as a trio, Philip de Vaus, Admiral Jacques du Cursé, and the cartographer Louis mon Feddicace. They were all apprehensive about appearing before the Empress, but Philip was a charismatic orator.

" Je ne suis pas, Philip. " As was custom, Empress Alexandria used Common only in certain occasions, and most other times stuck strictly Sessuan.

" Madam! We've naught to lose save for the greatness of our empire and perhaps new resources! "

" Nous risquons trop, nous risquons de perdre beaucoup de gens. " The Empress moved uncomfortably in her seat.

" Appoint me, or Lord du Cursé as governor and we will ensure that your lands are not wasted! We will make a new empire of Mille Sessau and it will provide the homelands with untold wealth, we must only claim the land for ours and than use what it will give us! "

" Que pensez-vous, monsieur du Cursé? " The Empress canted her head to look at the stiffened admiral.

" I agree, even with de Vaus as a provincial governor. It would go a long way to expanding the empire and give us a foothold into this new foreign world. I also agree that it is important to claim the land and than discover what secrets it holds, rather than attempt to find the most useful regions and isolate ourselves. "

The Empress paused, then reluctantly nodded.

The order was thus given that two transport galleys would be built and immediately fastened to transport four thousand native and willing Sessuans to the colony of New Mille. They would be free to settle where they wished, although there would be no central government, instead the small port of New Mille would be the home of the provincial governor Philip de Vaus as well as a contingent of three hundred Sessuan Milita (Light Infantry) which would leave the port as necessary to protect the scattered Sessuans who were plotting the land as necessary. New Mille would be expansive and it would take months to legitimately map out everything it had to offer, if anything at all, but the construction of the transports and building of everything necessary to facilitate the construction of the colony meant an estimate 1,540,000 Ses to pay for everything, which nearly emptied the entirety of the Empire's coffers.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

-- The colony of New Mille is built. It is a massive sized colony and cost 20 Economic Points.

-- Two transport ships are bought to facilitate the move.

Ezrian Mountain Chain,

" We vill hail them, non? "

" Oui. They do not look barbaric. I will go, with Reynault and Chaucé. Corporal Donnahuic, if anything happens you will take the people back to Sessauan lands. "

" D'accord! "

Capitaine Mathieu de Que and Corporal Reynault and Chaucé both ventured out from the rocky craigs that made up the tight mountain region. They were all chevaliers and thus wore heavy chainmail and broadswords at their side. While they did initially look imposing, du Que made sure to approach meticulously and when he was sure that the winged creatures would see him, he paused and waved to them. " 'Ello there! "

And this would be Mille Sessau's first contact with the outside world.

Governor du Vaus' Office

" We are not sure who attacked the village. There were no survivors, and they burned everything. " The militiaman stood nervously, as he was still unsure as to how his superior du Vaus' would react. The militiaman was part of a twenty man patrol that swept the eastern edges of the colony and make sure the inner villages were still active and safe. The small village of Marron had been attacked, it's entire inhabitants killed and its building burned down.

" I want increased patrols on the eastern edges. I want the entire Un Imperiale Regimenté to patrol in three one hundred men teams along the eastern villages to make sure this doesn't happen again. I will write the Empress and .. tell her of our misfortune and request additional reinforcements. Also, send scouts along the northern and southern veils to map out the entirety of the colony, if there are any resource deposits in this huge swath of land, I want to know about them! "

" Yes sir! "

New Mille, Eastern Border

"Leftenant! Smoke!" A soldier cried out in anguish, pointing to a thin black column rising from the foot of the nearby hills.

"Mon Dieu!" Leftenant Du Marron swore. "Fast March! Forward!" The soldiers were happy to obey, quickening their pace to a near-jog as they advanced through the pair of ruts which passed for a road.

The sight that greeted them was awful to behold. The small hamlet was a smoldering ruin, the burned and violated corpses of the villagers strewn about. And the. . . things. Great green and grey beasts with harsh skin, dressed in barbaric skins. Even worse, they seemed to keep great wolves as pets; mounting the beasts with saddles. The strange creatures were looting the village, picking jewelry off corpses and strapping trophies to their mounts.

"Barbarians!" Du Marron swore, ripping his sword from his scabbard. The blood pumped through every man's veins. "Onward! For the empress! For Sessau!" The men-at-arms rushed forward, bearing down on the village with wrath.

The greyskins took notice. Crude orders were roared in hoarse voices. Barbarians mounted their savage beasts and wheeled to meet the new threat, roaring with a bone-chilling bloodlust.

With a great crash the two hosts met. Men fell screaming as they were tackled and devoured by the wargs, or cut down by the brawny orcish warriors. In the choice and death the Sessauans wavered for a moment at the sheer ferocity of their attackers. Dozens fell. But the orcs' strength was not enough to protect them from human numbers and indignation. One by one the barbarians were dragged from their beasts and slain, the animals impaled on sword-tip or spear. Not a single beast escaped its divine punishment.

In the aftermath of the battle the bodies were counted, and it was found that they had slain twenty-six barbarians and their mounts. Twenty-one Sessauans were killed, and of the thirty-seven wounded another five would never recover. Only the corpses of the terrifying creatures remained to be hauled back to the governor.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The southern prospectors discovered gentle plains as they traveled south. The grass grew so tall that the men had to mount their horses to see over it, and the soil was of a fine black texture. At dawn the mist fell on the soil and nurtured it, evaporating as a pleasant sun followed. Trees were in short supply, likely due to the lack of an abundant water source.

All of the explorers agreed that the plains were incredibly fertile and would make ideal farmland. Several of the explorers suggested that the rich soil would be perfect for growing cotton, which could not be grown in sufficient amounts anywhere else in the empire. The leader of the expedition opposed the idea, saying that the morning mist would not supply enough water and that the cotton plants would exhaust the soil after a few years. He advocated planting grains instead, turning the valleys into the breadbasket of Sessau.

The northern surveyors were unable to complete their mission, deciding that it was too dangerous to venture towards the northern mountains now that the orcs had been identified as originating from that area.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- The Sessauans defeat a raiding party of orcs in the Skirmish of Fumee, but suffer significant casualties in doing so. No prisoners are captured, but the raiders seemed to originate from the nearby mountains to the northeast. Whether or not further raids will occur is unknown.

- The southern scouting party discovers a region of open prairie to the south with exceptionally fertile soil. The governor may either choose to grow wheat and other staple crops (Foodstuffs Resource) or try to develop cotton plantations (Cotton resource). However, there is a possibility that if cotton is grown, the soil will not receive enough water and replenishing nutrients to sustain cultivation. There is a risk that after a few harvests the cotton will exhaust the soil and destroy the resource.

New Mille,
Southern Plains

" A name, monsieur? "

" Ah yes .. I will call it Keye. It will be the breadbasket of the empire. " Newly crowned as Count of the Unsoiled Land, or Duc de la Nouvelle Terre, former Captain of the Un Regimenté Imperiale, Loïc Verras had been given his own fiefdom in a personal letter by Empress Alexandria de Salle. He was allowed to call the world whatever he wished, but he would have to tend the land and plant new crops to feed the people of the kingdom. Already a half dozen hamlets had been constructed around a central bazaar, and to the south of the small village were vast fields and plains that already serfs were beginning to clear to begin planting wheat and corn. The city of Keye would not grow quickly, but it would grow. There was some apprehension about building the city inland, as a port would have been important, but the New Mille Settlement had a small port that would serve the purpose of the Empire until bigger berths were necessary.

Fifty men-at-arms of the Un Regimenté Imperiale were stationed in Keye, while the others still roamed the Eastern Plains on the look out for orcish raiders. Keye would be a safe haven for those outlandish settlers that felt threatened by the raiders on the plains. Loïc Verras sent messengers to every hamlet and hut in New Mille to let them know that Keye was being built and that they could sell their goods there and come there in the case of further raiding. Also, the city of Keye was located just north of the plains where the native wild horses ran, and it would be that much easier to tame them and take them to Keye for outfitting. Already nearly a 1,000 Sessauan Light Cavalry were stationed in Keye, freshly trained. They wore light leather tunics and carried wooden spears with iron tipped heads.

600 of the present 900 Light Cavalry were ordered to begin patrolling the Eastern Plains, and when they ran into any of the first regiment they would order them to Keye for rest.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

-- City of Keye is established in the New Mille colony. (10 Cultural Points. Population currently 2,000)
-- Crops are planted instead of cotton. (Claiming Foodstuff Resources).
-- 3 Light Cavalry Companies are trained in Keye. (Already deducted EP and added them.)

Empire of Mille Sessau (T) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Empire of Mille Sessau (T)   Empire of Mille Sessau (T) Icon_minitimeWed Apr 06, 2011 10:20 am

New Mille Colony,
High Plains

Six days ago.

Captain Gourcoff called a halt to the march and paused to lift the waterskin to his lips and squeeze what he could from it. The High Plains were atrociously hot, even on the cusp of the fall season. Not a single tree in sight and stagnant winds made for what seemed like a desert with grass. They were a dozen strong, and Gourcoff one of three soldiers among them. They had been ordered by Governor du Vaus to head north and begin exploring the remainder of the vast High Plains in search of additional resources. Although it had been deemed dangerous by both du Vaus and his subordinates, all men were ready to give their life for the Sessau and the Empress. They had left the southern townsend of Keye and crossed the desolate plains until they reached the New Mille port where they briefly saw a handful of foreigners -- they resembled children but were stern and had thick coats. They resupplied and left north along the coast, they traveled two days before heading inland toward the great vast expanse.

" There is nothing out here, monsieur! " One of the surveyors exclaimed, crouching to scoop up a bit of soil and examine it. " Nothing but dirt. "

" We will command every bit of dirt then, and we will know every inch of it like we know Sessau. " Gourcoff noted, indicative that although he may have possibly agreed with the surveyor, he was going to finish his mission. Gourcoff was skeptical that in this New World any huge, bountiful forests were present or that any mines of gold and silver were prevalent. With every passing day Gourcoff seemed to regret taking his station in New Mille. He trudged on, climbing a steep slope of wild weeds and thick grass and looked out even further into the expanse to see what the Northern Lands held.

" Perhaps the Empress claimed the wrong lands. " One of the surveyors joked.

" No land the Empress claims is unclean, fool! " Gourcoff had the men by his tunic in an instant. He did not have him long, casting him back down the slope with a forceful shove that sent him tumbling back to the bottom. " Heresy is never accepted, even when the agents of the Empress cannot hear. Were I a lesser man I would not have forgiven you so easily. Do not make such a mistake again, Lordon. " Gourcoff turned back to the expanse of land before him, sighed and trudged on.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

" We have since expanded over eight hundred square miles to the west, a mixture of desert and grasslands. " The Royal Magistrate cooed, the Minor Court and the Empress listened woefully ; as though it might be interesting. The Empire of Mille Sessau had nearly doubled it's borders in the last year, not through military conquest or diplomacy but rather giving out minor fiefdoms to minor nobles and telling them to till the land. Count Anju of Val Avos held the largest portion of the Western Fringe, which was nearly now in central Mille Sessau by the great lake, with a myriad of minor fiefdoms to his west and northwest. While the minor counts had moved out into the expanses of land, survey teams had not yet been dispatched to see what resources they held. That would have to change.

Three teams were promptly organized, two of which would explore the unclaimed land between the Merenaz Caliphate and the Empire of Mille Sessau, and one team to navigate and document everything that was in the new claimed territory of Mille Sessau's borders. They would report their findings back to the Count of Val Avos, Count Anju and he would relay his findings back to the Empress for further evaluation.

Present

Governor du Vaus,
Your general ability and charismatic attitude in the face of great adversity have not gone unnoticed. I personally send thanks from the Empress herself for so calmly administering yourself in your new position of power, and it is for that reason we are sending you three regiments of men-at-arms and the chevaliers under Count Merci to ensure continued civility in the land. You are under orders from the Empress herself not to compromise a single inch of Sessauan land to these invaders and do everything in your power to maintain the Sessauan claims in the Eastern World.
General L'armee Simone Reynault

Three days ago.

" Get me Governor du Vaus! Get me Governor du Vaus! " The soldier cried over and over, even as his steed slowed and he attempted to dismount before the beast had fully stopped. The light cavalryman was exhausted and so was his horse. The horse was tended to and a few men-at-arms showed the soldier into the sod and stone hamlet that comprised Governor du Vaus administrative building. As usual, du Vaus was enjoying a cup of New Millean juice, foreign berries and water while tending to a slew of parchments across his desk. He looked up inquisitively.

" What is it? "

" The barbarians! A host of them! At least 5,000 strong marches across the High Plains. They do not head toward Keye, but their final destination is unknown. I shadowed them for nearly a half day before riding here. They are some leagues from us and moving slow as they have huge weapons of war at the rear of their column. They are not just barbarians my lord, but fair faced soldiers with ears like blades. I rode here as fast as I could, for I fear for the people. "

" You have done well son. I will .. take the necessary precautions. Get some rest. " He feigned a smile, looked down at his notes then back to the heaving soldier. " Go get some rest, son. " The soldier was escorted out and Governor du Vaus quickly began to write a letter to the Empress back in the homeland.

-- Captain Gourcoff and eleven surveyors head north into unexplored New Mille territory to see what the territory holds.
-- Survey teams are sent out to explore the new territory to the west recently added to the Empire.
-- Patrolling cavalrymen spot the huge war column headed from the east and a scout reports his findings to Governor du Vaus.
-- General L'armee Simone Reynault approves sending 3 Spearmen Regiments (900 Spearmen) and 1 Swordsmen Company (300 Swordsmen) to New Mille to help against the raiding barbarians. They will head to Keye.

"You are sure?" Captain Gourcoff asked the surveyor, who going through a small pile of stones.

"yes, monsieur." The surveyor replied, pointing to a red streak in the stone. "See that? Iron Ore, streaked between the layers of rock. If I had a smithy I would melt it down and show you! The orcs must be excavating nearby, no?"

All of the rocks had been taken from the satchel of a wandering orc, who had stumbled upon the party and promptly been run through. Gourcoff was actually relieved to see that the orc had been carrying rocks. Perhaps it was a surveyor of some kind, looking for resources just as they were. Searching its belonging had lead them to the foot of the mountains, where the others had easily found more such stones.

"See, the Empress was right." Gourcoff pointed at to the surveyor. "Now we go back and tell her, before these filthy beasts take it for their own. "

Lord Loïc Verras considered the report in front of him carefully. The cavalrymen were not nobles, and their handwriting was atrocious. A chicken could write better scraping in the dirt! This is why he kept a magnifying glass at his desk, and had his secretary read them aloud whenever he could. But alas, he had not had the opportunity, as this one had been promptly dumped in front of him by a very hasty sergeant.

Once he had deciphered the inscrutable hieroglyphics of poverty he found it was exactly what he already knew. The advanced party of those barbarians had reached the outskirts of Keye. Their numbers were small, and if he struck now he might be able to stop them from reporting to the main army, still two days out. However, with Count Merci's men still two days out such an action would be risky. It was a tight situation, but whatever happened it would be best if he could somehow delay the enemy from reaching his little fiefdom until his reinforcements arrived.

-------------------------------------------------
- The survey team discovers an Iron Resource at the northeastern border of the colony, but also discover that the orcs have been surveying the area as well.
- Cavalry scouts report that the barbarian army is two days march from Keye, but that an advanced party of 2,000 has reached the outskirts of the city.
- The men-at-arms and chevaliers under Count Merci are two day's march from Keye. They will arrive at the same time as the enemy army if no action is taken.

Jaudeaux, Capital of the Empire

" We have heard no word back from the Grand Flotte. We know nothing of their success or failure. " The tone was monotonous but Alexandria listened to every word. General L'armee Simone Reynault had the best intentions in mind, although he was not as charismatic as some would have liked. " We have received this letter from Governor du Vaus in Keye. Apparently a host of the barbarians has made itself known. He will defend to the last man if you will it, mademoiselle. "

The Empress sat in long thought, and finally answered back. " We cannot fight two wars, Simone. "

" That is yet to be seen, m'lady. The halflings strength is undetermined, and the barbarians are nothing but miscreants. Surely the steel of Sessau will be enough to quell them. " General Reynault stiffened up a little bit at the idea that the Empire was in trouble.

" I do not trust the winged men. They fight a war without due cause, a war of ages past. " Her voice, like silk, did little to emphasize her point.

" They are our closest allies! They gave us aid when others would not! "

" And what others have we asked, Simone? The Merennians know nothing of the world, and the stoutfolk the Ezrians condemn have approached Count Juva in Saint-Mille with open arms. The Ezrians are more snakes than birds. "

General Simone did not get a chance to reply. Grand Priest Tisne rose from his chair, though with only the greatest of difficulty and began to speak.

" She is right, General. We will stretch ourselves too thin, and victory will be evaded as Sessau wills it. We cannot relinquish the colony, it is too important to the Empire. We should relinquish control of the island back to the short ones. There are other islands out there. " His every word croaked, and it seemed as if Sessau's will was all that kept Grand Priest Tisne alive.

" The woodlands of the Western Continent have been exhausted, Tisne! That island is covered in lust forests and already a lumber mill has been built there. We must have it! " Simone retorted, spittle flying from his lips.

" Right you are, but we will abide the will of Sessau, and if she willed that island to us, we would own it without contestation. We must not press her will. "

There was little Simone could do against such words. Grand Priest Tisne nearly outweighed the Empress in political power with his supposed divinity of Van Sessau at his command. General Simone choked back words of hate and turned his eyes back to the Empress.

" We are at your command, m'lady! "

" Cut our trade deals with the Ezrians. Express our gratitude in their allegiance, but declare neutrality in their conflict and inform them when their ships return, they may repair at Chouannerie la Que and they may return to Ezrian waters. " She sighed, paused then continued. " Negotiate a trade deal with the Merennians. We will purchase their gems and sate the serfs desire for luxury goods. We must sue for peace with the halflings. We are at fault. "

" My lady! " General Simone yelled.

" We will repay them for our reckless choices with Ses' from the Golden Treasury if we must. Send one of our vessels to the island with the message to negotiate a peace. You will negotiate our peace, General. "

" I .. will do as you ask, Empress. "

" Send my personal grievances to them, Simone. Now go, and let the Will of Sessau protect you. "

Western Mille Sessau

The six men stood around the shoddily constructed table, haphazardly leaning on it and gazing at the map.

" Count Anju apparently declared Sessauan claims along this line here. " The first man proclaimed.

" A river? "

" More like a stream. Can't even get a boat onto the damn thing. "

" Guess it's on foot than. "

The men were explorers, and the Empress had just declared the Finality of the Empire with a literal declaration to the six dozen or so Sessauan explorers that made up the Mille Southern Explorers Guild. They were responsible for charting the rivers, mountain ranges and plains of the Empire, and now that had even more uncharted territory to explore. It would be the final frontier however, as the Finality of the Empire meant that it had claimed all the land that it would intend to claim. The last bit of land was a divide between the claims of the Empire of Mille Sessau and the Merenaz Caliphate. Mostly plains from the looks of it, but who knew what lay in the land. It was up to these six to find out. They had journeyed to Val Avos before setting out on their brand new Sessauan steeds ; considered the finest in the Empire.

They would carefully document every little and seemingly insignificant thing about the land, new native species, new resources, et cetera. They would not journey north of the Merena Minor, the so called river that indicated the border between the Merenaz Caliphate and the Empire of Mille Sessau. It would take weeks, but their job was well received by the various fiefdoms of the kingdom.

Empire of Mille Sessau

The life of a Sessauan noble was unique, if nothing else. When he was born, he was given a thorough inspection by the house staff for signs of disease or illness. Were he unfit to be nobility, he would not be cast aside but instead forcibly replaced by a later, though younger sibling. From the time he could listen and learn, the best tutors and educators in the entire Empire were at his disposal. The essentials came first, the teachings of Van Sessau, the geography of the Western Continent, the manners and expectations of nobility. He was taught the number, the letter and the sword. All nobility, no matter how minor, must be the cultural and military vanguard of the kingdom. They were it's first and last line of defense. The various rituals and teachings of the Sessauan nobility, called Le Edu, was a system perfected from over 200 years of feudalism, trial and error. To the Sessauans, there was no greater calling. From the age of twelve, young counts and barons were taught the blade, the stirrup and the bow. The world required at least competency in all three categories, but if that particular youth showed promise in one, they would be given free reign to perfect their skills as they saw fit. To ride was a cultural custom that many Sessauans had recently lost faith in, as the native Millean steeds had recently gone extinct due to errors in breeding.

At the age of twenty-two the noble would be cuffed from the leesh and finally set free into the world. Given a small bounty of some two hundred acres, the Sessuan noble would have nothing but earth and a small villa from which to grow his own miniature empire. This was the task for Baron von Deu. His father Viscount von Deu, whom hailed under Count Anju of Val Avos in Central Sessau had finally given a small chunk of land to his newly crowned son. " Go, " He told his son, " the Empress has expressed that you are now old enough to rule for yourself. Take a twosome count of my serfs and plot this land here. I'll see you in the summer. " Baron von Deu needed no further coaxing.

The Barony of von Deu was in far southwestern Mille Sessau, and it's borders lined that of Merena Minor to the northwest, the babbling brook that separated the borders of Mille Sessau and the Merenaz Caliphate. Explorers had been sent to the region but they had not yet returned with word of their findings. Baron von Deu would not wait. A convoy of carriages, with the majority of the two hundred serfs on foot, von Deu made his way into his new lordship until they reached the small villa. It was not much, twelve rooms with a few dozen small hamlets surrounding it. The carriage stopped when it arrived at the front of the home and von Deu stepped out, a huge fur coat protecting him from the light Sessauan snow.

" Lads, ladies! I welcome you to the new Barony of von Deu. I cannot promise so much success as my father, as we know not yet what these lands hold, but I can promise benelovence, I can promise justice! Claim your homes, for tonight we will feast! " The serfs obliged and scattered to go pick out one of the various wood and sod village houses that surrounded the Barony.

" Persno, my father said none of them know of Van Sessau. " von Deu whispered, somewhat absent mindedly.

" Indeed, indeed. I will educate them after the feast tonight. They must know Van Sessau, for Van Sessau already knows them. "

" Quite right, " von Deu retorted, quickly climbing back into the carriage.

" Have you heard word of Count Merci yet, m'lord? " Priest Persno inquired into the carriage, all the while Baron von Deu peered around inside it.

" General Reynault put him in charge of a thousand or so knights last I heard, sent him off on some damned crusade across the world. " von Deu continued looking and eventually found what he was seeking. A broad sword, still in its sheath, laying under the seat. " Said barbarians had been attacking the frontier lands or something of that sort. " The youthful Baron stepped from the carriage, quickly fastening the weapon to his side with his belt.

" Tisne whispers of a crusade, my lord. Anju would certainly call upon Count von Deu. " Such words sparked the attention of von Deu.

" My father is old and senile. He will not know the world past the borders of Mille Sessau, Persno! " The Baron, though young was forceful and relevant in his tone and posture.

" Of course my lord, I only tell you of what I hear. "
